I’m not sure if I have shared this on here or not – but Kingston has a hard time with diaper changes. He does not like to be naked and lets me know it every single time… by crying. Sometimes it is a little cry and sometimes it is a very panicked baby infant scream/cry. It all depends on how long I am taking. I’ve tried several methods of cheering him up during the process: singing, kissing his feet, reassuring him, talking to him, kissing his forehead, etc. Nothing makes him happy until I start to dress him again.
And along with each and every diaper change I think of a story my sister-in-law shared with me before Kingston was a twinkle in our eye… about our niece’s baby monitor.
Like the good mommy that she is, my sister-in-law will sing, talk, baby talk, and make sounds for Brooklyn in order to make her happy and have some fun interaction… all that can be heard on a baby monitor if close by. Well, one day her neighbor informed her that he had a scanner in his home and that he could pick up every word/sound that the baby monitor picks up in her home. Needless to say, this bothered my sister-in-law just a little bit.
Now, all of our diaper changes take place in Kingston’s nursery… right by his baby monitor. Because I have this story in my mind, I am always sure to talk to the monitor in order to let it be known that we are in the process of a diaper change and that I am not neglecting my child, beating my child, etc. by turning toward the monitor and clearly stating a diaper change is in process…
“Alright Kingston, after we CHANGE YOUR DIAPER, we will go cuddle downstairs.”
“AFTER THIS DIAPER CHANGE, do you want to nurse Kingston?”
“So sorry Kingston, YOUR DIAPER CHANGE is taking forever today… mommy will try to hurry.”
Who knows if anyone can pick up our monitor or not (our neighbor is a detective for the police department), but I will continue talking to the baby monitor with each and every diaper change anyway.
Yep… just call me crazy baby monitor lady.
